Why do people think Aussies are "laidback" when they really are not? |
I'm a student here and see most of my mates work 60-70 hours a week. At the local call centre, most employees (they are Aussie citizens) are working their @sses up at night - in most Australian offices, it's not uncommon to find people working in Saturdays (I'm a legal student so know better) or even Sundays sometime. In short, the work culture in Australia is more like Asia e.g. Japan than Europe e.g. France where they work no more than 33 hours a week - now that's what I call "laidback" Please don't compare job occupations such as lifeguard with a systems engineer - there are jobs that require more job skills compared to others - I think in general "Aussies" are becoming more and more competitive. Some belive that Australian attitudes regarding general activities other than work and finances may be considered laid back...generally I see it as a trend right across the world people want to make it and to make it you need to work for it. easy first i ever herd of any one calling Aussies lazy the only things i hear is about the great beeches and wild life you have Aussies in general are laid back - and always have been. You are referring to work - not the general lifestyle and peoples attitudes. Aussies may work harder and for longer hours but they choose to do so, not because they have to. So in general - YES AUSSIES ARE LAID BACK what aussies in a call centre ---- Never!!! the stereotypical laid back aussie laidback because of their attitude and lifestyle, not the amount of hours they work, this varies from person to person. also, a lot of students work insane hours to pay for their university courses etc, and sometimes saturdays and sundays are the only available times to do this We are still pretty laidback they dont call us "The Land of the Long Weekend "for nothing. |
