How to get a job at Wall Street? |
I'm a college student in Asia, I want to work in financial field, Wall street is the ideal, how can a foreigner get a job at Wall street? Oh just swim over and expect free health care - that's what our friends to the south of us do. Apply to the Cities works department. With a bit of luck you may be allowed to clean the side walk as a start. Wall Street is an area--there are lots of companies on Wall Street. You need to narrow your search to some firms you'd like to work for. Being a foreigner doesn鈥檛 disqualify you from getting a job on Wall Street, and in some cases it can actually be an advantage. Most major investment banks look for people who have excellent grades (minimum of 3.5 GPA or higher on US scale) and some understanding of finance or economics (the more the better). The first step is to get an interview. The easiest way to do this is have a friend in the industry. If you are not one of the lucky few, you may try some other shortcuts. Many i-banks hire through major universities and career forums so you may want to check the web for some finance related career forums in your area. Another option is to apply though the local branch of an i-bank in an area near where you live. Most large i-banks have a rep office in most major Asian cities and full office in Tokyo, HK and Singapore. Once you have the interview you just have to demonstrate that you are smart and hard working. Another hint: before you start looking you should identify what kind of job you want to do. Corporate Finance, Sales & Trading, and Research all generally have independent HR departments so you need to make sure you are chasing the right people. |
