I am married...FAFSA?

Ok I am married but my husband is currently is Asia, waiting for his visa to come here. I am 18, I live with my parents. I am considered independent..but then again I still literally depend on my parents, and I dont have a job.
How might the FAFSA results come out? Will they see me as independent or dependent? And if they know I live with my parents, will they then calculate my parents' AND my husband's income and I will get almost no money at all?

because you are married, you will be considered an independent student. you will not list your parents' financial information on the FAFSA, just the tax info from you & your husband. you will also not include your parents in the household size question on the FAFSA (ie. if you do not have children, your household size will be 2, with 1 in college).

that's the "textbook" answer... since you said your husband is waiting for his VISA to come to the US, you might want to contact the financial aid office of the school you plan to attend just to make sure.

one question, is your marriage legal/recognized in the US? if so, then my advice should generally be good. if not, then definitely contact your school's financial aid office! Source(s): i'm a financial aid counselor
