What would you rather do? (serious career question)? |
I am unemployed now. My family is planning a vacation for three weeks to Argentina in August. My mother really wants me to go. I have a couple of interviews lined up with great companies. I wish I could go on vacation and interview after, but I doubt they will be willing to postpone that far. Would you rather go on vacation and continue job searching when you come back or would you focus on your career first and interview with these companies now and start for them if they offer you a job? I have about 3 years experience so getting interviews with these companies is pretty exciting for me. I don't know what your financial situation is, but good opportunities don't come along every day. I would probably go to the interviews now. Two months from now they may not have an opening. I wouldn't ask for a vacation right off either. I doubt that they will hire someone who wants a three week vacation less than 2 months after starting a new job. Of course, if you are a rocket scientist or something of equal ilk, that might make a difference. If you are financially able to postpone your job search then go on the trip otherwise I would focus on my career. If you feel you would regret missing an opportunity with one of these companies you may want to consider that as well. Sounds like you are more interested in your interviews. I would go on vacation. Because it would be my only chance to go to Argentina, Your situation is much different, maybe you could go at a later date,(without your mother) She would like you to go. Is that important? How about interview now and start the job after the vacation? If you can do so financially, take the vacation. You never know when the next one is. Plus, you're going to Argentina! How you're actually considering not going is beyond me. I would jump on the opportunity to go there. Is there any reason you can't go on the interviews before the vacation? That's over a month away. If it is impossible to interview before you go, you're going have to decide which is more important to you. Personally, I'd much rather go to Argentina (especially if it's a paid vacation) than a job interview. Once you start working, you'll have the rest of your life to keep working. As you interview, let the hiring managers know that you have a vacation planned, and that you are interested in the position, however you have this prior committment (that is already paid for). get that job if you can then when your making good money take mom on another vacation later on down the line. This is your one opportunity to make something great happen in your career; and oftentimes, we don't get second chances. I would forego the vacation and focus on getting a job. interviews and companies will come and go. a trip to argentina will last a lifetime, with the memories and the family.you can lose a job, these days you cant really depend on anything. you cant lose good times. you come into this world with nothing, and you leave the same way. material things, after a while, mean little. that why home owners after a few years find their garages full of junk. i would go. |
