I have just seen on CNN that 3000 miners are trapped in a gold mine in S. Africa?

Is gold really worth that sort of price ? Miners do a dangerous job for little pay. Next time anyone buys a gold chain should remember this. Just hope all are rescued

Yes. It's the Eldenfield shaft outside Johannseburg. They are trapped because a power pole crashed into the mechanism for the elevator, rendering it useless. Since then they have rigged a replacement elevator and have brought 76 to the surface with more to follow. It can take up to 24 hours to get them all out of the mine. Fortunately none are injured. The problem is diminishing air supply.

I cant believe that 3000 would be allowed to be put in that situation,seems like that many miners wouldn't able to be in such a vulnerable position all at once .It don't make sense from a business point of view ,to risk losing that much production in one accident.Of course its all driven by greed and lives don't matter.I hope they are rescued and can live to tell the story and have the owners and management prosecuted to the fullest extent of whatever laws they enforce there( I doubt they really have any Safety Laws)

Have not heard that but would not be surprised. Roman empire mining involved digging the tunnels then flooding them with the miners inside, you could always get new miners. Attitudes have not changed that much, only the stuff we say about attitudes.

I just asked the same question. Can you believe this story? Do you think they will all get out alive? I hope they make it, I just can't help but think they are going to be in a bad way, what with the greed and low wages there. It's awful and I'm hoping they make it.

3000 trapped miners sounds like a terrible case of negligence.

Of course you're so right. we need to be aware of these things that make our very privileged and wonderfull lifestyles possible.

Isn't gold also used for a lot of things other than ornamentation, like electronics, medicine, scientific research, etc?
