Is it true that most low level Security Officers do not have a job and are on-call for post?


I have heard how they are not well trained and will hire almost anyone. Schedulers rarely have jobs (stable posts) for Officers and do LESS work than Human Resources Personnel meaning they pretend to work but are lazy. Sergeants do the work of Lieutenants and Captains without the pay just the responsibilities. That Human Resources Managers and Low-Level Security Officers are under-trained, Under-Employed, Under-Paid with almost no opportunity fro promotion and rarely get a pay-raise even after passing the probationary period. Also get no over-time pay; they begin early and go home late. They equipment is not in the best conditions. People who make money are from Contract/Facility Managers and up the ladder of management.

I used to work in security. I started as a mere officer and in three years worked my way up to Captain. I think the pay all depends on the company you work for and the facility/contract you are assigned to work at. I know everytime I got promoted or got a raise, it had to be approved by, not only the regional manager of the company I worked for, but also the contract client for the location I worked at.

None of the officers worked more than 8 hours though. Maybe some companies make the officer go in early and leave late but my company never did that. They were pretty fair and if there was overtime to be had, it was on a volunteer basis and people usually grabbed it up and they DID get overtime pay for any overtime worked.

As far as the equipment, it's not always in the best condition. From MY experience that is not always the fault of the security company though...... My boss used to try to buy new equipment for us when needed, but the moron employees didn't take care of it, and after awhile you get tired of spending money just so it can get broken. So that might be the reason that a lot of companies don't have perfect equipment.

As for Sergeants doing the work of Lieutenants and Captains without the pay.....well all I can say is if someone does the work for a higher up and you don't demand that you get paid your worth, I guess you bring that on yourself. My boss tried to get me to do their work too. I saw it as a challenge and a way to work my way up, BUT.....I also let them know that if I was going to do work that was outside my job description, I expected to get paid for it. Not everyone is as bold as I am, and if you stand up for yourself and your worth, YES....people WILL take advantage of you. That's ANY job though, not just security.

The part about not well trained and will hire almost anyone. That's partially true. We would hire people with NO experience, because our company provided them with a three day training and then after that it was a week or so of on-the-job training. Each prospective employee had to pass a background an drug test before being considered for employment though. When I did the hiring, I was very selective in my hiring, but there were times when we were very short handed and my boss would advise me to not be so selective. I didn't like it when I was forced to hire just anybody and sometimes I still was very selective to a point (what my boss didn't know, didn't hurt him).
