R&S Friends, forgive this off topic question: How do you prepare for a career change?

I have been working at my current job for a little over a year and a half. As Director of Human Resources and Assistant Controller at the age of 20 (with no college), I have a great position within the company. Due to personal circumstances I feel that it is time for a career change and that I can no longer stay with this company. I am extremely saddened to have to make this very difficult decision but I know it is the best decision.

I bought a house an hour and a half away from home to live close to this job and since I plan to make a career change I plan to move back home as well. I will have to sell my house, find a new one, and (hopefully) find another good job. I have gained a lot of experience in my current position which I hope will make up for the fact that I have no college background (although I plan to begin night classes in January).

How do I plan for such a major life change?

I do plan to find another position before I leave this one.

To me it sounds like something has happened maybe within your position or you not getting along with someone. You sure are willing to give a lot of what you have worked hard for and accomplished. Sweetie, I would try and resolve the work conflict. If you can't then find you another job first before you leave. You bought a home at 20? Wow and congrats to you! Don't waste your hard work. Hang in there!

*edit*

I have changed jobs several times and moved acrossed states. One bit of advice. Stay calm, don't rush it and dont' stress yourself. It is hard and a lot of work, so cut out the small bs and just stay focused. You will be just fine!

Play the R&S drinking game!

But seriously, you need to break everything down to its smallest component! For instance HOUSE. You need to focus on that as a separate entity. You might opt to rent it to reduce the penalties of selling it too soon. MONEY, try to keep 3 months worth at all cost! It will come in handy when you need it. Since you are 20, seek low interest credit routes. EDUCATION. again keep this separate from everything else in your mind. Not breaking everything down will only make the problem feel too big to handle. good luck!

Heck, I do that about every two years. It isn't as big a deal as you think.

Just try to find the new job before you quit. It's a lot easier to negotiate and to say no. Also don't screw up an let your current employer know until you have another job.

Are you sure you want to leave your current position before finding another? Even if it is temporary?
