I was asked to return to a job I recently resigned from....?

I worked at this local company for one day (6 hours) and resigned due to an untimely death in the family. Just yesterday my old boss at that company called asking if I'd consider returning to the same position and I'm assuming the same pay... thing is I feel I could be worth a little more than what I was originally hired at. What should I do? I asked her to give me until the end of business on Friday (28th), but I'm not sure if I want to return. It's a position in HR and I'd assist w/Payroll and go to certain off property sites. (I'd get reimbursed for the miles, etc.) but I still feel that the position if I wanted it, should pay a little more. (Prev. pay was at $15/hr., I've asked if they'd consider maybe $16/hr.) since they're the one's looking at me to possibly return. I was told that since I've resigned back in mid-November, they haven't looked or even tried to fill the position... any suggestions? What type of leverage (if any) do I have at this point?? HELP! Thanks all!

Depends. Do you need a job or not? If you need a job (like most of us do) then take it. It's better than them not giving you the raise and you'd be unemployed for who knows how long.

Take the position and then negotiate a raise and explain to them why you think you're worth more. Maybe they don't have the budget to give you more pay? You never know.

Tell them you still think this would be a good fit but you have several offers. See if the can up the hourly.

Sorry for your loss...

You should have asked for $17, since they'll probably make a "counter-offer" of $15.50 (They have nothing to lose, and 50 cents an hour to save!)

You have a fair amount of leverage if you think about it...you won't need any training, you already know everyone, and they like you (or you wouldn't have been asked back!).

Best wishes, Happy New Year!

You left them high and dry by resigning and they obviously
did fine while you were gone and you want a raise ????
If you don't want the job then don't take it asking for more
money would be unethical

You really dont have any leverage since you only worked at this company for a 6 hour day.
And expecting a $1/hr raise for that one days work is a little out of line as well but you can always ask.

The thing to look at is that they may have put off hiring you back late in the year so they dont have to pay benefits/holidays for that year and a lot of companys dont give you the full amount of days off if you are not employed Jan 1. They give you a prorated amount.

Also if they can save the cost of interviewing and running another ad, fine, but they dont have a lot of training time invested in you so that's really not a factor.

The point is, you are not so entrenched that you could not be easily replaced. By all means, you can ask for a raise but unless you have a firm offer for more money elsewhere, I would seriously consider it at your old salary. It's 30K + a year and jobs are hard to come by.
