How much does consulting company, when it receives payment from the client, give % on average to a contractor?

assume consulting bills client $1000(10 hrs @ $100/hr )and receives $1000, what % goes to the contractor who performed the work(i.e. what is end pay rate after the cut for the contractor)
Industry: Computer/IT field

Good Day,

I have done consulting work part time since 1986 and full time since 2001. I current run four small companies with one of them being a consulting firm in which I contract myself and others out to other consulting firms as well as directly with clients.

Your question is a good one and it pays to ask as many people as you can because there is no one set rate. I have seen the high end up to around 70% take by the primary consulting house all the way down to about a 10% take. Thus in the 70% rate, you would get 300/hour while in the 10% take, you would get 900/hour.

Thus, it all depends on what you can negotiate with the consultant house. One thing that you will ALWAYS need to be very ethical in is once you enter a client through another consulting agent, any new business you might create there must go through the original firm who set up the first contract.

The are three primary factors that lead to higher rates for you as the subcontractor:

1) How well known is the primary consulting house and what type of reputation do they have in your particular industry (Information Technology I assume in your case).

2) How badly are your specific skills or services needed by industry?

3) How well known are you in the industry! By this I mean, do people in your industry know who you are. Can someone do a Google (or other) search and find your name? This comes from maybe having your own web site(s), having written articles, speaking to various professional groups, publishing of books and other items, etc.

So you end up with a lot of variation out there and it is up to your particular selling skills to determine what percentage you will get and or if you can go out and sell yourself to perspective clients who will be willing to hire you directly (thus giving you the entire receipts of the billing).

The links listed below might be of some help in learning more about selling yourself to consultants and clients. I have used each of them and feel that they can teach a lot. The Nightingale Conant group is the largest seller of audio/video training in the country.
