Thinking of starting a consulting&administrative services business for overflow offices, now what..? |
I mean the consultants have skills in all administrative fields, hr, data entry, ms office software, excel, powerpoint, presentations and the list goes on , however I dont know which way to take this, offsite, on-site, or depending on project? or just structure my business like an agency, i'm stuck. I have a vision but im wandering please help!!! The website for the Small Business Administration should be able to provide some tips and insights needed to start a small service business. Also, an important part of beginning a business is to determine which type structure to use i.e. Corporation, Partnership, or Proprietorship. In other words will you need to report your income on a 1120 or a 1040 Schedule C. Remember to license your business with your city and/or county clerk's office. Usually if you go to the County Clerk's Office they will tell you if you will need to register with the City or not. There are usually minimum receipts before registration is required; however, I always get a license just to be safe. Another consideration that occurs to me is to research your target market to determine what need (if any) exists for the area of service you are interested in. For example, offering a service that provides office services to merchants such as typing, presentation creation, or even copies could be helpful to other small businesses. Are you willing to do quantatative work...if someone asks you to create a mailing list with tens of thousands of names, addresses, and telephone numbers using a telephone book, are you willing to do the work and if so...how do you charge...by the name or by the hour. This is an important consideration because once decided..it will become protocol for your business. Business practices are reported to the Better Business Bureau when there is a variation in protocol. So, make any and all decisions carefully and try to imagine the worst that could happen to cause you to regret the decision made. Know your competition. What are they doing that you intend to do, too? What do you intend to provide that is similar or different from what they offer? In other words, why choose your company over theirs? You need to be ready with responses to questions or comments that suggest that another company is already available to whomever you offer your services. Another suggestion is to look for an area Small Business Agency usually sponsored by state and in larger areas. They offer guidance and support for your new business venture. Also, consider speaking with a bank about your plans so that if you need to borrow money for supplies or especially equipment. As a matter of fact, composing a "Business Plan" that gives full details of your business, who you intend to provides services to (actual or tentatively), and any other information that would enable a quick explanation of your business intent. It works as a roadmap to enable you to work the plan and grow your business. Good luck in 2007... Source(s): http://www.sba.gov/ http://irs.gov http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/arti... do not know Why do you want to become a consultant in this field? Do you have years of experience? Have you written a book on the subject? You will need to be able to convince potential clients that there is some reason that you are a good source. If you haven't consulted before you need to figure out how much your time is worth in terms of billing. If you are planning to hire others, how much will you pay them? You will have to charge your clients enough to cover their expenses, salary, benefits and your overhead. I recommend you spend some time observing other businesses that do what you are considering doing. Maybe even take a temp assignment in a company like the one you plan to launch. Good luck! |
