You know those hotel workers who are supposedly 鈥渄oing the jobs Americans won鈥檛 do?鈥?

Looks like one of the jobs the hotel workers won鈥檛 do is wash dirty glasses properly. MyFoxAtlanta, a local news station in Georgia, went undercover earlier this month to investigate housekeeping sanitary practices at several hotels. There is no way around it, our dirty hotel story was gross. Even our public health expert called what we found at the Holiday Inn Downtown, the Alpharetta Embassy Suites and the Sheraton Galleria Suites disgusting and outrageous. But most importantly, he said what we watched was a clear health code violation.

This is how we found out about the story: a former employee called me to say that housekeeping doesn't wash the guest room cups or glasses. Sure enough, armed with hidden cameras we found he was right. The Embassy Suites housekeeper sprayed a blue liquid labeled "Do Not Drink" into our cups, which she put in our dirty sink. She rinsed them out then set them back out for the next person.

A spokeswoman for Embassy Suites wouldn't go on camera but let it slip, "Well they only have X amount of time to clean a room and that's why they do it." What?!?!?!?! Is she saying management doesn't allow them time to properly follow county health codes?

At the Holiday Inn housekeeping just splashed some water around the glasses then left them for the next person to use.

But the most disturbing thing we saw was at the Sheraton where our housekeeper, wearing a big glove, cleans the toilet. Next, she uses that same glove to clean our cups. But there's more: she sniffs our dirty wash cloth and uses that to dry our glasses.

What did Sheraton management have to say? "It's too controversial an issue" to comment. Hmmm..... Why is it controversial if it's an isolated incident?

The question is whether these housekeepers just weren't doing their job or if that's the way they are taught to do it. Here's what I know: we randomly picked these hotels and each one of them did nearly the same thing. We walked the hallways of these hotels to look at the housekeeping carts. We never saw racks of clean or dirty glasses anywhere.

If I could have gotten one spokesperson to talk in-depth I would have also asked why they re-use the paper caps on the cups to make the guest think they're freshly cleaned.

When we checked in to each of these hotels we told the desk that we were one company but two people would be staying - one the first night, a new person the next night. Not all of the hotels even bothered to change our sheets, if you can believe that.

Are these isolated incidents or is this just the way the major hotel chains do business these days?

What do you think ?

I watched that news story and it was outrages. Once again business not only seek cheap labor, but allow them to cut corners

I've heard of it happening at hotels, before. And whenever there's an outbreak of some disease on a cruiseship, I think that it must be how the house keepers pour cleanser into the toilet bowl, and then use that water to clean the sink. It saves time...!

what has this got to do with immigration?
many corporations have very stiff labor guidelines and managers for those companies do stupid things to meet those guidelines. management in many cases are paid bonuses based on profits, labor is the highest percent of expenditure in almost every business. so what has your story got to do with immigration?

i have done what's called building maintenance for a major company (yes i know another job we americans won't do i've done many for apparently not knowing any better). i was not given anything to sanitize (no bleach, ammonia, cleanser, nothing) . i cleaned offices including the bathrooms. i came to understand that to look clean does not mean something is sanitary/sanitized.

The problem is that housekeepers ( legal or illegal ) are given a limited amount of time to clean a room. Time is money.

I would imagine the problem is worse with the least trained and/or experienced housekeepers.

I recommend the hotel use a little more supervision and training. Housekeeping speed is important, but our health must not be at risk.

Disgusting............

Having worked as a housekeeper,I know that for certain things we are given an "X" amount of time to do.If management has a special deal with a certain vendor,we often would get stuck using mediocre supplies also.I think it's rotten that these companies are getting away with this.I really don't know what this has to do with immigration. All I know is that I have done that job,and if push came to shove,I'd do it again. They need to have infection control in-services on a regular basis but since they want to cut corners and save money, these are the things that happen unfortunately.

for one:
the sheets don't get changed for the same customer who stays 2 nights. unless they make this request.
and two:
the stuff that was sprayed was then rinsed out. right? sure it said do not drink but that would also be true for dish soap of any kind. I don't have a dish soap that I would want to drink.
and three:
I have heard horror stories in restaurant kitchens where Americans cooked . oh and take my experience advice and bring your own pillows and blankets when you go sleep in hotels. I used to work in hotels and we weren't allowed to change the blankets after every guest. only the sheets and pillow cases. this is standard for medium price hotels and under.

Over half of my coworkers are legal immigrants. The company use their immigration status, and lack of education to force them to perform substandard work in violation to the law. Americans do violate various rules and laws, but it is far less than the immigrants. The reason is that we are far more free to report abusive behavior to the government. It's one of the reason why companies prefer immigrants. It's also common practice to understaff the work place to make them work harder. Bosses are rewarded for keeping cost down rather than performing high quality work. THe last place I work , I had to quit because half the immigrant workers would take improper short cuts and work extra hour but only clock in 8.. THe boss get mad at the rest of us not performing the same level of work as those who violate the rules . They don't question why they were able to do it and was even notified of the abuses, but ignored it.

I always said the main problem with illegal immigrants is that the bosses can leverage more work from them, because they can more easily ask them to violate the law. They do work faster than Americans, but at the expense of safety and quality. When they are legal, they have more recourse to demand reasonable work environment and work schedule.

As to janitorial work, it isn't that citizens won't work these jobs, but they won't work in the required parameters. Many of the Housekeeping jobs are seasonal. They require more maids in the vacation months, and have a harder time finding Americans who are willing to take temparary positions. THe article shows that these companies have gotten to greedy. PS, Atlanta should send a health inspecto to test for soap residue in the glasses. THey have small kits for that, and it's easy to do. They should have high fines for hotels who show they frequently violate the health code. That way the city is willing to send health inspectors to profit from the fines.

Edit: AS for Sexy Mama's comment, some of the cleaning solution is highly toxic, and sufficent amount would remain if the maid simply rinse it. I've checked some of the MSDS on these cleansers.

If you think that is the only nasty place where there are discrepancies for cleanliness. What do you think is in those bowls of peanuts, or chips sitting at the bar? Always ask for a fresh bowl of peanuts or chips. Of course if the bar owners are cheap, they'll have their employees just pour unused portions back so as not to waste. Maybe you better bring your own, and be safe.
