Setting up wireless broadband in a small hotel - will a normal router (and repeater if necessary) do the job? |
I work in a small hotel (20 rooms). I am in the process of setting up broadband through wireless for the hotel, rooms and the flat that is attached. The office is on the ground floor and the rooms are split over the 1st and 2nd floors. What sort of range does a wireless router have? Would a normal router broadcast up to the top floor or would I need a repeater? What brands are best? Where's best to buy from? Important to get 802.11G not 802.11B Mount the box as high up as possible. Get one with a proper antenna - you'll see it sticking up. You can buy almost anywhere, but dabs.com I have found to be good. In that size building, you'll probably get away without a repeater - it depends upon the fabric of the building. SImple thing to do is try it and then test reception as far away as possible. you can connect up to 10 devices On to a router.. and assuming 10 devices connect you Must have a decent speed on the broadband otherwise dial probably will beat it.. Depends on how thick the walls are... For a commercial broadband system you need to talk to your ISP. You could breach the terms of the normal residential broadband contract if you dont. If you use a booster for the signal it should work. As for brands the most powerful and secure is the best, for brands see URL's below. Just remember the 2 things that block a signal are water and metal, so if the Hotal has any of these you will need a booster in the black spots. http://www.firewallguide.com/wireless... http://www.consumersearch.com/www/comput... http://www.consumersearch.com/www/comput... http://www.pcw.co.uk/hardware/wireless... The range of a wireless device depends on many different factors, such as interference from other devices or the thickness of your walls. It is possible to get a booster antenna (most wireless stations have a plug for one) to improve the range but the only real way to find out is to try it. If you find you need more range you could get a network cable wired to the top of the building and put another access point here. Each access point is like a new wireless network but some can be used to repeat the signal too. Hope that helps |
