An hotel or a hotel? |
I know that it is technically correct to put an in front of a word beginning with 'h'- at least that's what I've been told but it looks so ridiculous, but in a job application I have to put a(n) holiday club- which variation should I use? You can say "An" hotel, but should always write "a hotel" - The form an for the indefinite article is used before a spoken vowel sound, regardless of how the written word is spelt. If you say 'an otel' when speaking (which is now often regarded as distinctly old-fashioned), then it may be appropriate for you to write 'an hotel'; but most people say 'hotel' with a sounded 'h', and should write 'a hotel'. Source(s): http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/f... A hotel A Hotel I think you will find that you don't put an infront of a 'h'. E.g A House, A Hostel, A Hotel. I am going to a house I am going to a hostel I am going to a hotel. It would sound wrong should it be written I am going to an hotel. A hotel. You only use "an" when the next work begins with a vowel. Check out the style guide available from The Guardian website - it will give you all the info you need! Since you 'hear' the H, put a. When you do NOT hear the H (honor), put an. |
