How to get an IT job without real experience?? |
How to get a job & convince a recruiter if you have no real IT experience?? I am planning to get an SQL Server Certification & practicing 8 months in a lab environement. What are my chances to get a job without real time experience?? I am working in an hotel should I mention that I have some SQL dutions in this hotel? I don't want to lie but I am 45 so I don't feel going for an internship. Even after an internship employers won't look it positively for a 45 year old guy!!. Thanks for your feedbacks. Ummmm Im 15 and got accepted to Microsoft training so I think you got a job as long as you are convincing Good luck. Try getting a few certifications first. There are tons related to SQL. Look at cisco.com and comptia.org. If you have certifications no one can stop you boss. Don't go for any tutions , read all the stuff onlike . Ms SQL Server has it's online help which is awesome for certification. see this: http://www.hwg.org/services/classes/sqls... http://www.geekinterview.com/interview-q... Here is a very frank suggestion , you don't need to go for any internship. and better don't go becoz you won't get any thing in terms of money. So Direct apply . If you really don't have IT exoperience then apply on basis of frshers and tell them that you have 8 years of hotel experience. ha's simple. Be true in terms of your experience and tell them why you want to join IT .But don;'t lie on anything becoz in companies ,they check background also , they gives call. If you are 45 then you have deep work experience in other areas already. The same qualities that make a good employee in non-technical areas are valuable in technical areas too: hard work, learning new skills, team attitude, helping people, etc. Be sure to take time to understand your own strengths (The book Now Discover Your Strengths is one analysis tool you could use). Then prepare some stories from your work experience that clearly demonstrate your strengths, and describe these in your interviews. When looking for a job, talk to ALL the people you know who have IT jobs and see if their company is hiring. Most people that I hire are direct references from someone I work with or otherwise know well. Get on LinkedIn.com or similar and build your network of colleagues. Maybe someone you have worked with in the past will just happen to be the key to getting you into a technical field. By all means mention your SQL duties at the hotel. If you can get permission from your hotel to show some of the actual SQL statements you've done (these can be "munged" so no identifiable information is in them) then the interviewers can see what you're actually doing, right now. If you can't get permission, oh well, but describe your accomplishments in detail and how you have really helped out the hotel. I'm always impressed by someone who spends time on IT work outside of their job. So in your case, for example, you may want to create some database apps at home. Even better if your church or local boy scouts or similar could use some database work! Whatever the level of your ability, you can always learn a lot by tackling your own projects. (You can always download a free database server like MySQL if you don't own SQL Server.) If you're having lots of interviews but still not having any luck getting an IT job you might try getting a Customer Support job at -- this is important -- a company that serves technical customers. For example a web hosting company -- somewhere where the customers are basically IT people. These kind of companies usually have good training programs for their Customer Support reps. And good promotion paths into more technical areas of the company like QA or Operations. Good luck to you I hope it works out well! Now Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham http://gmj.gallup.com/book_center/ndys/d... MySQL open source database http://www.mysql.com/ LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com I am not sure what you mean "SQL dutions in this hotel". If you mean duties, then absoluty. Real world experience trumps certfications. I would suggest getting envolved with user groups in your area. Get to know people, let them get to know you. After they have seen you around a bit and at least recognize you, ask some of the more knowledgeable ones this same question. If they like you, you might find yourself with a pointer to an entry level position so can get some of that real world experience. However, when 'networking' with professionals, do not knock companies or products. The one the left used to work for that company. Or the one on the right was a developer on said product. And merits of any given product aside, those of us that are in the field and have been a while, we know the good and bad of the products. We also know that maintaining and/or developing for these products is our lively hood. Another thing when networking with professionals, if you ask a question, listen ot the answer. And dont disagree. I dont care if he is wrong. 1 year from now he or she may be the one interviewing you for that dream job. So just assume they know more than you do, or that you dont fully understand the context. When your done with your certification, look back on those labs, note down some of them that seemed interesting. Write some articles and/or tutorials around them, one at a time of course. Spend some time on each one, research it deeply. Compare and contrast how the whatever it is works on different versions of SQL, or what versions of it support it. Put each one together into an article and submit it to as many relavant SQL sites on the web. Make sure to list them all under publication on your resume. All the best for future. First of all you have to join for acedamic performance. And then you should learn things. as sql, mysql and Java. Be prepared for the interview. That's it. |
