What is hot in computer job market? What if i read will get me a job immediately? |
I am new to computers. What, if i learn today will give me a decent job in a short term? The whole industry is going through some big changes right now so what's hot is pretty hard to pick. My list would be: 1. Web programming with Python, PHP, Ruby. Java and ASP.NET are good web frameworks, but the 4GL languages are so much faster to develop in and seem to be the core of most new web 2.0 sites. 2. IT infrastructure consolidation using commodity hardware, open source software, and virtualization using VMware, XEN, etc. 3. Web Services-based middleware. Yahoo, Amazon, Google, etc. are exposing business services via web services that all generating all kinds of new business models. Mashups are leveraging UI and backend API interfaces to create new web applications like Zillow, etc. 4. Business Process Modeling is getting a new breath of life as the Java application servers and .NET framwork mature and there's a demand for good business analysts who can document business processes using UML, BPMN, or BPEL. 5. Mobile device applications is still a hot area, but very challenging due to the short lifespan of the equipement and myriad of connection protocols: EDGE, EV-DO, UMTS, etc. 6. VOIP using the Asterix open source PBX. Later versions with SIP support for CTI is really going to be cool and there's a big demand for cost savings to rip out old phone systems and go to wireless. 7. Jonathan Schwartz pointed out that more money will be spent on storage than on software for the next couple years. How companies deal with rapidly increasing amounts of data is going to generate demand for database and storage infrastructure skills. 8. Software as a service. Even the big players are starting to realize that selling software as a right-to-use license is a dead-end and the future is in the monthly service charge model. Basically, people looking to get into the I.T. field should steer clear of commoditized areas like application programming, customer support, embedded systems, etc. Hope that helps! you should look at going to school. and become a intern at a computer co. |
