For Southern Ireland please. Hot Water Tank removal?

We live in a bungalow with the hot water tank in the hotpress on the ground floor. We'd like to move the hot tank fed from the loft, into the loft, is this an easy job, and would the floor of the loft be strong enough to take the weight?

All ideas appreciated. Thank you

Is your hot water tank electric heated, or gas heated. If electric it requires no extra venting, just an electrical feed line that is heavy enough to take the load. If gas, venting pipes must be provided, along with the gas supply lines of course.

There are lots of things that can be done to provide a strenghtened joisting for this tank to sit on...the easiest being a "marrying or sistering" of joist boards from the outside wall to the midline load bearing wall. This would require you to fit another floor joist just like the one already there, into the space beside the present joist, and then joining them together with bolts in several places. You should only have to strengthen the joists directly under the tank. Then provide a proper platform of 1" X 6" planking, covered by a 3/4" plywood in the area directly underneath the water heater, spanning the married joists.

Make sure to run on plumbing lines in the inside walls to avoid freezing during cold winter weather (which southern Ireland usually doesn't get, but it's still better to be safe than sorry).

Personally, I would opt for the suggestion that the first guy gave. Replace your hot water tank with an "on demand" system (as they are called in North America). They really do take up much less room, cost much less to run, and have the added benefit of always available hot water. And they come in either gas fired or electric models.
Moving hot water tank into the loft is a problem as it is gravity fed from the cold water tank which would then need to be moved above it. If you are going to the bother of moving tanks then you should consider installing a gas combination or condensate boiler and get rid of the tanks all togeather. Also comes with added benefit of constant hot water costs half as much to run as your immersion heater and you have lots of high pressure hot water for god showers.
To help you calculate the weight of a tank full of water, A gallon of cold water weighs 10 pounds. So if your tank holds 20 gallons, the weight is 200 pounds plus the weight of the tank, and so on. 30 gallons would weigh 300 pounds. The water tank that supplies your hot tank must be higher than the hot tank by at least 2 feet otherwise you will have no pressure on your hot water.
Plumber.
