My husband has been searching FURIOUSLY for a job in his field here in Houston. He has tried Monster, Yahoo Hot Jobs, Career Builder, Dice, Houston Chronicle, cold-calling recruiters & staffing agencies, etc. Even when he does see new listings for VB6 or Oracle8 jobs, he rarely gets an interview. He has all of the qualifications, education, and experience. What is going on? He needs a job!
How is his resume? That fact that "he rarely gets an interview" leads me to believe that his initial efforts are not representing him in the best light. As someone who has hired people, I am often surprised when people send me resumes (thinking they are putting their best foot forward) that don't speak to the job they are applying for, have nothing to do with the needs outlined in the job description, are bland and don't speak to any achievements, etc. I've also been cold called and I can tell you that none of them were effective. Basically, he may need to rethink these initial strategies and think about what impression he is leaving with people - the problem might lie there. Also, he may want to ask the recruiters and agencies for feedback - they might be willing to offer it. |
