For waitressing, how do I hold my hot, heavy trays while handing the food out to the tables? |
I've been working at Cracker Barrel for a month now as serving assistant. Now I'm upgrading to server and I just started training today. I was doing good up until I spilled a Coke on a customer. The only thing I have a hard time with is carrying the hot heavy trays. Even with the round trays i have a hard time handing out the food while holding the tray. So please help me. I need to know how to be a better server. My trainer just told me instead of trying to balance the tray just rap my arm under and around they tray, well that's a probl;em because my arm is not long enough to be doing that. I know I have enough strength for this job because I work out all the time, so I need to know what is wrong with me and how I can fix my problems?! Thanx, Jacque When I waitressed (way back when) we had stands that we could bring out to put down our trays as we handed out hot items. If you're having a hard time, use one. Better that than to spill on another customer. You'll eventually get the hang of it when people aren't staring over your shoulder. But for now you're organized, the clients are well-served, and the food is getting out there hot and on time. Many restaurants have folding stands for the servers' trays. Does Cracker Barrel not? (Out here in California there are no Cracker Barrels, so I cannot go check for you) Jacques, I used to work at cracker barrel, so I know exactly what you are talking about. For the round trays, take time to place your glasses equally around the tray, hold the tray in the center. I personally did not put my hand flat under the tray, but relied more on my fingertips for balance. Take your time!! Make an extra trip if you have to. Its tricky, YOU WILL GET THE HANG OF IT... As far as the other trays, balance them against your body. Use your server book as a "hot pad" and rest the tray on your forearm, that way you will not get burned and don't seem in pain when you are delivering the food. Smile, tell people that you are training, you will do great, it seems like you really want to do better.... Let me know if you need any other tips on serving, I did it for many years and made pretty good tips:) Ran many a hot cracker barrel tray |
