Accounting or political science degree? |
i know accounting is a hot job and all, but you know, i am taking accounting classes now and i have zero interest in any of it. i do have great interest in the political science field, but outside the few governemnt jobs, i don't think there is much of a job market for it. what should i do? accounting pays, but it is not for me and i kind of dread getting educated for a job i will end up hating. but if i get a pol science degree, i would feel stupid getting educated in something with hardly in career choices besides education, which i have no interest in. an advice? Poli Sci is a Liberal Arts degree that could get you into many entry-level jobs. Accounting degree will pigeon-hole you into accounting, perhaps you could transition to finance if you like that. I would recommend Poli Sci if thay is your passion. Too many people are stuck in jobs they hate. Volunteer for a political campaign and see what it's all about. You can also pursue a Masters in that or history, economics... go to law school. You could stay in academia (i.e become a college instructor or professor), go into research, or you can get just about any entry-level management job as long as you have a Bachelor's degree. Go to your university's career center and ask someone about the marketability of a Poli Sci degree, you may be pleasantly surpried at how viable it is. You can dual major or you can major in Polysci and then go for an MBA with a specialty in Accounting or another area. Some colleges allow you to get an MBA while getting a degree in another field at the same time. The other alternative is to go to law school once you finish your political science major. Most people who major in polysci go into law or business. It isn't really that useful. You're on the right track. My best friend is acutally graduating with her Master in Political Science, she is interviewing ALL The time for jobs, and no one can seem to match her salary requirments because so many people have political science degrees and are trying to get the same degree for less money. Political Science definitely has to a field where you have great passion for it and to tolerate a lower salary for a while. Accounting is a good market to be in but do you really wanna be "stuck" in a career you won't be happy with.... Don't do something you're not interested in. Yeah, you'll get a great job but you'll be miserable. I'm not sure what the Poli-Sci job options are, but if you love the field you could always teach it. There's money in it if you teach at University level. Sounds like you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. I always say to go after a career choice that you love, but why spend four years of your life in school just to find out that there is no need for political science majors. Maybe you should explore some more options. |
