Start with A+ certification, this will enable you to get decent paying jobs of a permanent or part-time nature. Then work on your MCSE and go from there depending on what type of work you find or what you like to do.

The hottest career track in IT is for .Net developers, mostly for Asp.Net web applications and web services, but also for Windows desktop applications and Windows Services.

As far as education goes, Computer Science with a focus on Object Oriented Development. Some schools actually teach .Net languages like VB.Net and/or C#, but most do not.

Most companies count real world experience as more important than education or certifications.
