I'll graduate college in a year. When should I begin applying for jobs? |
I'm a senior in college and will graduate in May 2008. I compiled a list of 16 companies I want to work for. At the moment, I'm in the process of customizing my resume and a writing cover letter for each organization. The only question is, when should I apply? I always tell my clients that you should always be looking for a job. One of the main problems that people have with seeking employment is that they wait until they are dissatisfied with the job or unemployed. You mean May 2008? Apply when you are ready for interviews. You should apply now for some kind of internship/part-time job. That way when you graduate, you're already in and don't have to compete with all of the recent graduates. I would tend to agree, right at the first of the year, unless any of these companies have internships, or if you know anyone to start courting directly. I would start sending "notes"/resumes now to potential employers that you are about to graduate in a year and that you wanted to get your resume on file now, so that they will be familiar with who you are. You probably already know, it takes MONTHS to find a GOOD job-start now and get a head start above your competition. I would say wait until the last 6 months before your graduate. |
