Attention English Majors - what jobs have you found after graduating with your BA in english and what...?

what jobs have you had, right out of graduating, how long did it take you to get a decent job, was it in your field? or completely different, what have your experiences been so far and any advice to a recent grad now starting off, job hunting and feeling a bit overwhlemed

People often think that with an English degree you're limited to teaching or writing jobs, and I don't think that is true. Having said that, it is difficult to define what would be considered "in the field," since you probably got your degree by literary analysis and criticism, which is not something that is commonly used in a workplace. I started working in a law firm as as soon as I got my English BA because they are always looking for people with solid word processing and editing skills, and it's a great resume builder. They also tend to pay pretty well even for entry level jobs, and talk about building connections! It was a great way to get paid while I spent a good amount of time figuring out my next step. I also got a great recommendation for grad school out of it, and having both an academic and an employment recommendation really helps your application if you think you may want to go back to school.

What do you mean by "within the field"? "English" today encompasses so much, and as the above poster already said, it is not limited to teaching and writing.

Presumably you gained good communication and critical-thinking skills from your years of English study. That can apply anywhere. Just make sure you use it.
