What kind of jobs are available to a new college graduate with an English major? teacher or something in the publishing industry or any cooperate soul sucking job that all they require is a degree, any degree. newspaper, copy editor? English Majors can do anything. I went into Credit Accounting right after school with a Fortune 10 company. I then went on to Project Management with another Fortune 10 company. I am now in Product Management for a major IT company. I have always said writing code is like dissecting a poem. A project plan is just like a research paper. A sales meeting is just like a good murder mystery (Who did it? Not Me!). You are prepared to do anything - you just have to have confidence and the will to continuously learn. Companies are seeking thoughtful, open minded, flexible, and well-rounded people. English Majors ought to have that in abundance. Companies know you have no real experience coming right out of college so don't worry about that. Documentation is so important in most companies - and great writing skills are hard to find, unfortunately. Have no fear. You just need to be creative in how you present yourself to employers. Practice your interviewing skills. Focus on your writing skills. Make sure your resume is flawless. And, a kind suggestion - go after larger companies to start. Smaller and start-up companies need experience, no matter what they indicate. Get your training from the larger firms because they typically don't slash training budgets and they ensure their employees get the training needed. It's a great foundation. There's always "barista." Sorry ... couldn't resist. |
