What job should I take? Computer Science graduate.? |
I am a Computer Science graduate . What job should I take and why? Feel free to elaborate... ( just to get some ideas and opinions )... Would also like it if you talked about work satisfaction and salaries as well as anything else that you think would be relevant. questions you should ask your self. What would I like to do if i could have any job in the world? where would I start if I wanted to get into this career. Alternatively you might just want a job. For a computer science grad the best places you can start out is ina large well run organisation that have a graduate recruitment program. Best of these I think are the big multinationals IBM, Microsoft, oracle. the large banks would be an excellent place to start if you wanted to get into IT(servers and stuff) Multimedia? I know that it is looked down on but if you wanted to learn flash an large E-learning company would be ok they do some heavy duty stuff although the work can be boring you will be a hardened multimedia engineer after it . do you like Computer games? Plenty of good. THink about what you would like to do. ask your self what are you good at. first job can be important but getting *a* job might be more important. Computer Science is so general. Computer jobs are very specialized. I'm not sure that you'll have any other options other computer repair and or entry level network maint, if your even qualified for that. Schools really rip alot of people off nowadays. I'm sorry to break the bad news to you. Expert knowledge in a new field (like Ajax), Certifications and/or programming languages are what you need, in the computer business. A degree is just icing on the cake that some people who don't have exp hiring "computer" people require in addition to the knowledge of a specific skill set. Some entry level phone support jobs are coming back from India lately but the competition for them is pretty fierce and there are. You, unfortunetly just pretty much wasted alot of money and time on that far too general degree. But at least you got (hopefully), an introduction to the many different types of roles in the computer industry. Pick one that sounds interestiing and study hard and try to take that particular technology to another level. Then your ready to get a job. If you were in the St. Petersburg Fl area, I'd offer you a job as a salesman for my Web Design company, texxsmith.com Work for google.com http://www.google.com/jobs/ computer science degree can lead you to many areas - typically you get a base for java programming skills. The degree is helpful when it comes to salary without the degree you make a lot less. If you've done nohting while in school you'll be at the same level as somone without an education for at least a couple years. I'd suggest you use the search site such as computerjobs.com monster.com and dice.com you'll notice most companies require experience and a degree for higher level positions. typically without a degree you won't get more than junior level. with a degree you'll still be at junior/entry level but in a couple years can go to mid level or after 5 - 6 years senior. starting out will prolly get you $30-$50k after a couple years $40-$75k after 5-6 years $90k+ Of course everything is dependant on WHERE you choose to go. Cost of living varies with salary. Many times salary also vaires with hours worked! |
