Which Graduates would Get better Jobs: Computer Science or Software Engineering Graduates? |
Which Graduates would Get better Jobs: Computer Science or Software Engineering Graduates? software engineering, is better paying job.. computer science is wonderful as well. Software Engineers. Development jobs are hot right now. There's always an abundance of computer science grads anyhow. You'll be setting yourself apart from the pack. How do you define "better?" More money? Better hours? More flexibility? More upward mobility? All of the above? I have been in a position with a couple of different fortune 100 high tech companies to hire / recommend hires. Plus, more recently I have been involved in academics. It seems to me that many (but of course not all) computer science degrees have been "dumbed down." Sorry but learning how to use word processing or spreadsheet programs or learning how to surf the internet is not computer science it is computer usage - but there are college credits available in some computer science programs for these very things. So, if I were still in a hiring position and I was looking at entry level candidates, I would ask for an official transcript. If I saw computer science credits awarded for the type of things I mentioned above I would question the overall quality of the program and probably reject the candidate. How does this answer your question? Well getting a job is the first step. Having the skills necessary to do the job is next. If you get a dumbed-down compSci (or software engineering) degree you should probably count on getting a dumbed-down techie job. Data entry, report writing, etc. I think most companies (esp. the best) are going to either already know the reputation of various degree granting institutions and their programs or they are going to seek the data from you. |
