What is a music producer's job description? to finance the production or to actually make the music? |
people tell me it's only to finance the project... but then i've heard of people talking of "the best producer" etc... so i'm curious as to how the greatness of a producer lies in the amounts he has shelled out... A GOOD producer's main task is to make sure the artist's vision is being captured. That is, as opposed to the RECORD COMPANY'S vision being captured. A good producer isn't as concerned about the budget as they are about the quality of what's going down in the studio. In theory, any producer worth their salt should at least be a multi-instrumentalist and also know a few things about the mixing board and recording console. Any producer who just sits in the control room looking important deserves to be SHOT. They are a waste of oxygen. I mean, think about some of the most successful albums made; then look at the production credits. True, some are self produced by the band or artist themselves, but keep in mind "Sgt Pepper" was the first album ever where the production team got as prominent of credit as the artists! The Beatles never could have made "Revolver" or "Sgt. Pepper" without them. Music production is NOT easy. As a musician who runs my own recording studio, I daresay that being the musician making the record is a lot easier than being the producer producing it. Sound production is made up of umpteen million little things, any of which can do your head in... To make sure the music sounds good. they're sort of like a movie producer *i think* they basically make sure the songs sound good and that everything is taken care of on the album In the music industry, a record producer (or music producer) has many roles, among them controlling the recording sessions, coaching and guiding the performers, and supervising the recording, mixing and mastering processes. This has been a major function of producers since the inception of sound recording, but in the latter half of the 19th century producers also took on a wider entrepreneurial role. These activities comprise music production (record production). The executive producer is normally the person funding the project or recordings.
