I have just applied for a Federal loan do I get to have some of the money to cover my other monthly expenses?


I am soon quitting my part time job and I applied for Federal Student loans. SO do I get to have some of that money to cover my monthly expenses?

The school will take the money to cover tuition and fees. Anything that is left will go to you, however, you will not see a penny of it before Oct 15th. The next disbursment will be in February. That will be the only time you will get money. I suggest you keep that part time job while you are in school. It may cut a little into your social life, but it will be well worth it. (Having no money will also cut into your social life)

The money you receive is supposed to be applied towards school related expenses like tuition, room & board, books, etc.

Always keep in mind that the amount you receive, you will have to pay back! You don't want to be paying on student loans for the next 20 years!
Don't listen to morons who tell you to be carefull with federal student loans. Get all the loan money you can and yes whatever is left over after you pay your school tuition is yours to keep(Its called an overage check) and you can use the overage to pay for rent, transportation(car), day care, really anything you want. Listen, student loans are the best, sure you have to pay them back but the interest is lower than any other line of credit you'll ever get and it will be a positive on your credit report.
You get a predetermined amount based on dependency and grade level....they then split that in half (for both semesters) and what ever is left over is yours to use, ussually not much more than the cost of books. You can apply for a private loan such as a sallie mae signature loan.
