What "NEW" jobs are we creating...more service, govt excess? |
More dead-end jobs in the service industry, running the scams for Citi-Cards? Or figuring ways to cheat people who work at Wal-Mart out of their break? Or more govt' entitlement "jobs" which are redundent, overlapped, duplicated, no longer viable, etc, etc. Just like in Vietnam, it's all about "body counts" and making the numbers look good, however way the WhiteHouse spins it. I don't believe JACK anymore at the local, state and federal level. We are becoming as corrupt as communist China. I'm not sure how serious your question was -- it sounds like a rhetorical question followed by a speech -- but I'll answer it anyway. Each administration (regardless of party) claims to have "created" jobs when the job counts climb, though, frankly, few of those jobs are created by the administration in any sort of direct sense. Usually, they're created by a growing economy, and the administration takes credit for it to offset the fact that the voters will hand the administration the blame when the economy declines and jobs are lost. So if you want to know where the jobs are being created, just look at the sectors of the economy that are growing the most quickly. You can also check the Bureau of Labor Statistics to see what job fields are growing. My guess is that the job growth goes well beyond the sorts of jobs you're denouncing here (probably most of it is in the knowledge-production business -- tech fields, universites, research, etc.) Of course, whether one wants to give any administration credit for this sort of thing is up to you. Personally, I'll give as much credit to Bush for the new jobs as I gave Clinton during his term for the Internet-bubble jobs that appeared at that time -- very little. |
