I'm assuming private schools want to supply their students with the knowledge that will help them on college entrance exams, job skills or what ever the student's goal is, but does the federal government place and requirements on what has to be taught or how it is taught?
No. The big difference between private and public schools is that private schools don't receive government aid, that's why they are so expensive. So since the government doesn't fund them, the are free to teach what they want, but that doesn't mean they do not follow any guidelines, since they, like public schools, what to prepare their students as best as they can for the future. No. Thats why its a "private" school.
