About to lose my job. Lost, need a change. Please give me advice!? |
I have been in MISERABLE office jobs since 2004-small companies, low pay,no raises,no room for growth/opportunity,and I've HATED the jobs. The problem is, I have $61,000 in student loans ($47k in federal; $14k in private student loans with variable interest), car payment, car insurance. It's extremely trapping. I think I am getting laid off by end of Dec. Ironically, I have been PRAYING to finally move out of my parent's house (moved back 2 years ago for financial reasons), get out of this job, and get a chance to make a change and get my own life back! I am really scared because I don't know what type of job I want anymore, but I know exactly what I DON'T want! I also have like $6-7k saved up, but my bills are like $900 a month (not including an apt.). I do have experience now though (2-3 years). I'm just LOST right now. I would love to try FL or MA. I want to find a career and place that will finally make me HAPPY. What do I do? Where do I start? Please help! Before you go moving to Massachusetts or Florida, check out the costs of living there. Consider a visit before you plop money down on an apartment lease and find yourself unhappy ... or more unhappy. Do you have a degree? Check with your school's placement office for job leads. Don't even consider moving out of state right now if you will be eligible for unemployment compensation if and when your job ends. Take the money and get a life plan rolling. Might I suggest a counselor? If you have benefits with your present employer, you may be able to get a counselor under your health insurance plan. Don't wait!!! It may be a $20 co-pay but go for it. It will be worth the money to discuss the many changes you have in mind. Job loss is stressful but then when you add financial stress and wanting to relocate and everything else, you should find someone to talk to. Once you face the fears you will be better able to overcome them. YOU are the most important person in the mix. Things always have a way of working out but you get out of life what you put into it so give it your ALL. have you thought about joining the peace corp? I would be a good change of pace and you wouldn't have to worry about your student loans while you served. I wish I had a magic answer, but I'm in quite a similar situation myself. The only advice I can offer is don't wait to lose your job, start looking for new work now. Get your references together, rewrite your resume and prep yourself. And if you are laid off, join some temp agencies and try to get short term work until you find something more permanent. It will help pay the bills and keep you occupied, so you don't get so depressed about the situation. Hi! My advice to you is to Network Network Network. Use your existing network to communicate with hiring managers, employers and other job seekers. Your full time job should be finding your next job. Use niche job boards such as Continuingcareers.com to find your next job. Remember that the skills you have from your old jobs (even the jobs you hated) will be very useful in your future jobs and will look great on your resume. Best of luck! Lisa |
