Do presidents have to pass a background check before they can be elected?

i'm just wondering. everytime i fill out an application to do work for the federal government, even state depending on the job, i have to pass a background check. and they're pretty thorough, so a job as important as being president should do the same. right?

Background checks are performed on various aspiring candidates every four years, which is not to say it is a very effective background check and what determines the failure of a candidate's background check would appear to be quite arbitrary as evidenced by the moron who seemingly passed the last two background checks.
no they have money and Friends with money you don't

im sure they do
Yes, but if you are the son of a President, it's a difficult job and well, records get lost.
NO. However the media checks the entire background and polital history of all Presidential candidares over many many months. Nothing can remain hidden so long.
Does anyone temember Senator Gary Hart? He had to drop out of race when he was a favorite.
