In the paper, the federal gov't was advertising jobs $12-40/hour.Called & they want $$ for their info - legit?

So I opened up the classifieds, saw that the federal government was advertising work from $12-$40 and hour. It gave me a 1-800 number to call. So I call, an operator picks up, and asks me a few questions, then says she can send me all of this information along with a study guide and a practice postal test for a little ol' fee of $69.99 plus shipping. Sounds weird that the federal government is asking for money to get information that I'm pretty sure is..."free" ...?? ... Is this a scam?

old scam.

It is not the fed. govt. It is a scam by private individuals who only forward information to you on how to apply for govt. job - information that you can easily find yourself.

YES!! It is all information you can get for free with a little work on your end. My husband actual worked for the 1-800# telemarketing dept while he was in college! There are also many jobs on Monster that are like this - very frustrating when you are looking for a job!

total scam

The Federal Government does not advertise for jobs like that. These are people who gather information that people like you and I can get on our own if we were willing to take the time to find the necessary information to get jobs at the USPS (postal service) or any other government agency. Go into Google and put in Federal, State, County , or City job search and you get a list from whichever agency you put in and the job list will tell you what jobs are available, what the job entails, and the requirements to get the job. It will also tell you how, when, and where to go to apply.
These ads in the paper are a scam, so "DO NOT SEND MONEY"
The same goes for ads that claim to prepare you for exams in those same jobs.
Remember, "if it looks to good to be true, it is"

What you found is a scam.

I fell for it 5 years ago, What there doing isn't illegal but don't waste your time. You would probably have better luck scouring the internet, contacting recruiters (be careful), and cold calling potential employers.
