How do i dress for a test to a federal clerical job?

I received a notice that i need to take a paper test for a federal position and it would last about 4 hours. do i need to dress professionally as in an interview? does anyone know if an interview is involved as well?

No, an interview will not be involved at this stage of the process. Candidates for federal employment are first given skill assessments. Those that rate the highest are then selected for an interview. You'll probably be testing with a few other candidates. While they might show up in jeans, you should still dress professionally. Go for business casual.

Just to take the test, it doesn't matter what you wear. Jeans would be fine.

The person conducting the test will never see you again -- as long as you are clean and neat it does not matter what you have on. Be comfortable.

Business casual..meaning no jeans or tennis shoes....try a nice button down shirt with some slacks and church shoes....loafers. I don't think they connect a interview with the testing but it depends on the agency you're going through. But just in case be ready for an interview. Practice answering questions like...why should we hire you or why do you want this job...and what can you bring to our company?? Good LUck

I agree with most of what ResumeResults has to say. I'd change two things:
1) The most important thing is that you are comfortable during the test. The tests are long. You will be stressed. The room may be warm or cold. You don't want your clothing to be uncomfortable and thus distracting. If the room is warm, you can take off a suit jacket or sport coat. If it's cold, you can leave it on.
2) Just saying business casual implies all jobs are the same. You should dress at or above the standard you will be expected to adhere if you get the job, bearing in mind number 1. As resumeresults said, you won't be interviewed, but as a former test proctor, and a hiring manager, I have taken the testing opportunity to get a first look at candidates, as well as had other managers ask me for my impression. As the cliche says: "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." Some research indicates that hiring decisions may be made in the first seconds of meeting a candidate. (See source) Your appearance the first time you're seen may haunt you the rest of the interviewing process.

While federal managers are under strict guidelines regarding hiring, some of the process remains subjective. You should do whatever you can to present yourself as professional and competent throughout the hiring process. If you can wear a suit comfortably, and you'll be expected to wear a tie if you get the job, wear a suit. If you can't wear a suit comfortably, or you won't be expected to wear a tie if you get the job, wear a dress shirt and a sport coat. Some people believe that there is no difference between khakis and slacks, but I can tell the difference from across the room. So, wear slacks if you own them, and they are comfortable.

Definitely something comfortable. It is now June, so don't wear a winter weight shirt or suit.

4 hrs is a long time, so wrinkle -resistant pants are advised. Leave your cellphone in your car, that way you aren't inclined to check it during this interview/testing. And be prepared for an interview, either before or after. Everything in the screening process is under scrutiny, so take a copy of your resume & references, just in case...

Good luck

If you dress Office Casual you can never go wrong. This way you're not over dress or not appropriately dressed if there is a following interview.Good Luck.
