Why is fingerprinting done when you get a job at a federal prison?

I got a job with the BOP and the lady in human resources say that it take a week for my fingerprints to come back. What is the purpose of fingerprinting?

Just provides for a more thorough background check(just incase you lied about anything else). Also sets up a file for you.. just incase in the future you should do anything bad.. they have your fingerprints on record now

To ensure that you have no criminal record. Consider the things a criminal might think to gain from such employment, such as access to a captive market (pun intended) for drugs and worse. A gang could infiltrate the prison its members was in for the purposes of escape, or to punish those who have offended it and are in protective custody.

Those who had access to personnel records could use the information against the honest employees and/or their families. Consider the nightmares that might cause. That should be reason enough.

Frankly, in a just society that did not have a bunch of stupid social legislation like marijuana prohibition, a total record of fingerprints and dna would be an advantage for us all, but because the government insists on intruding into our lives in ways we find unacceptable this will never happen.
