Federal background check?

A job I interviewed with performs a federal background check prior to employment. What exactly shows up on it? It's for top security clearance at Department of Homeland Security..specifically, could they/would they look up things such as online accounts/memberships? As in yahoo! answers, and, ...other sites

No- not knowing what's involved with a background check is no biggie.

Couple of items - they want to know your criminal record, any illicit associations (terrorist, Michigan Militia, etc.), and if you have a poor financial record (bankrupt for no good reason). They'll also check with the State Dept. to see if you've visited any improper countries including Cuba, Angola, and North Korea.

This level of background check is a minimal one at best. The "adjucation period" is not so long - but they usually allow for work once you pass some preliminary checks.

They may send the postcards to your friends and family - usually of your choice. If you have relatives in federal gov't, police work, military, or state gov't make sure they end up getting refferred. The postcard gives their chance to mention any bad about you - usually no room for anything good.

They will check everything and talk to all your friends, family and neighbors.

No they won't....they will check all states to make sure you don't have any warrents or dangerous charges anywhere...don't worry your porn memberships are safe!!!

A Fed background check is one designed to check out your legal life and your affiliations with organizations which may be against the USA. I would not sweat the small stuff. They just want to make sure you are an upstanding citizen of the United States. I know this because I have had enough jobs that required these checks. You will be just fine. And I do hope you get that very good job!

I find it odd that someone that would qualfy for such a position would have no idea of what would be included in such a search.

I would run a $15 report off this site to see what comes up. http://www.easybackgroundchecks.com
