Must I register my organization with the federal government?

I began an environmental organization promoting grassroots activism (check out the website www.thegspwebsite.com ). I would like to promote/develop my organization and in order to do that I will be starting a for-profit business so I can generate my own income, quit my day job, and spend more time working with the organization. I have been recommended by some to register my organization as a non-profit. However, this involves a whole other level of difficulties (redtape, a board of directors, etc) that I was hoping to avoid. Isn't it possible/legal for me to have a member organization that I use my own income to support? Aren't I better off-if possible-simply starting my business and then using the money to make donations to the organization? As long as my organization is not selling anything and I am not looking for grants from anyone is there any reason/neccesity of registering as anything with the federal governemnt? Thanks for your help
