Following up on application?

I applied for a federal job (Australia) and sent my resume and selection sriteria two weeks ago. The selection process started October 1 (because that was the deadline to submit applications, and they said in the ad that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Would it be okay to call or email and follow up or shall I just wait? The anxiety is killing me because I want the job, and I feel very qualified for it! I at least want to know their time frame in working with these applications.

Federal jobs are tough because there is so much beuracracy in hiring. Your resume may be going through an HR department and they are not even the ones that will interview you, they just weed out the wierdos. You may have to be patient until you are chosen to interview. If you do get an interview, make sure you remember the names of those you meet, then you can research and send them a thank you letter.

October 1 was just over a week ago. Your faith in the efficiency of the federal bureaucracy is touching but misplaced. They're probably still sorting the applications. Don't bother them. Be patient and in the meantime, apply for other jobs.
