Possible military separation for APFT failure? |
I've seen lots of questions asked about this one, but my case is a bit different, I signed up for a 6 yrs contract, I'm almost in my 5 years of active reserve, but I can't pass my PT test, I know I can get separated from the military even though our retention/recruting NCO tried to scare with "you'll get a dishonorable" I know in fact is not true and on the long run I'd like to serve in the US Foreign Service, and it is a federal job. Since I received an honorable discharge for service in Iraq and I'm considered an OIF Vet, why would I lose the Vet's preference points deal? would I lose my GI bill too? You won't get a dishonorable discharge. If you do not pass your PT test , you won't be able to reenlist for more than 1 year. You will keep your veterans preference (DD214 from Iraq) and if you haven't already used it up your GI Bill. I was in a similar situation this year when I failed my PT test. I was only able to reenlist for a year no bonus. Since I aced the PT test. The US Foreign service is good but also look at the State Department or the USDA Foreign service. The Discharge that counts for everything is the last one; a careerist can have numerous Honorable Discharges but if he gets in trouble and is discharged with a Dishonorable or less then Honorable that is the one that counts for everything; you can have over 20 years in mess p and get court martialed and given a discharged with a less then honorable and lose retirements benefits also. I do not think that they would give a Dishonorable for not passing a Physical Fitness Test but they could; if they think and you have no medical reason to not be able to pass it then they could give you a less then honorable and might do that. If that happens what you lose would depend on the type of discharge of that nature they give you but anything less then an Honorable or General under Honorable will effect at least part of your benefits and preference. You'll leave the service with an honorable but you'll lose everything else because you did not full fill your contract you signed, bottom line. Find a way to pass the damn PT test it's not that hard, I had to pass them for twenty years every 6 months. you wontget kicked out for failing your pt test if you gained 100 pounds thats a different story |
