US Federal Government Chain of Command?

Wht is the "Chain of Command" of the US Government in rankings, and is the ranking the same is someone could not perform their duties, i.e. The President is taken over by the Vice-President, then who takes over the vice-presidents job, and so on down the line.

Wasn't there a mess years back whereas someone said they were in charge but they were wrong? Also, if it takes the house and senate to vote, and this occured as a terrorist plot, how would they vote, they would have been sent away huh?

wartz is as close as anybody on this. The Presidential Succesion Act of 1947 provides that after the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, the President Pro Tem of the Senate, and then the members of the cabinet in the order in which their departments were created would assume the presidency, EXCEPT for one thing. In 2007, Congress amended the Succession Act to insert the Secretary of Homeland Security just after the Attorney General in the line of succession, figuring that in the state of emergency that would likely exist requiring the line of succession to go that far, the Homeland Security Secretary would have a stronger sense of how to quell the emergency than whoever would be next in the existing order of succession.

The president (whomever that responsibility would fall to) always has the responsibility to fill the office of the vice president by appointing someone, who must be approved by both houses of the Congress before assuming office. Then, he or she would have the added responsibility of reconstituting the cabinet by appointing the appropriate person(s) who would then need confirmation by the Senate.

I believe the new President/ex Vice President elects a new Vice President... if both the President and the Vice President are assassinated, The Speaker of the House assumes the role of Presidency. Beyond that, I don't know.
