Jobs in the Banking with an Engineering degree?

I may sound thick here, but I'm really confused - twice this week I've read about people just graduated with engineering degrees being recruited to work in investment banks; what has engineering got to do with banking, financial analysis, etc? When I hear engineering I think, mechanical, electrical, construction etc., is there another kind? Just curious.

Banking on all levels be it retail, financial service, investment, etc. is a highly automated industry that requires software and systems engineers in large numbers to keep everything running smoothly. Also, retail banks use very sophisticated integrated machinery to process checks and payments. Upgrades, R+D, maintenance, etc. requires mechanical engineers. This sort of thing is often outsourced but generally to companies that do little else than provide service to the banking industry.
It's not the fact that they have a degree in engineering; it's the fact that they have a DEGREE. Employers look for that piece of paper that says "Bachelors Degree" because it shows that you had the motivation and discipline to go to class, study, do your homework, and make it through a 4+ year program to get that piece of paper. In this particular case, these people that have engineering degrees may have been recruited by investment banks because engineering involves a TON of higher math that can be applied to finance and banking.
mostly they held a position as a (stock, bond, options) trader or IT-technician in investment banks. Both jobs require strong math and programming.
Banks hire engineers because they tend to have highly developed analytical and problem solving skills. In addition, most engineering curriculum requires a lot of math and statistics, which is very applicable in investment banking.
