Mechanical engineering tech? |
Would I have a hard time finding a job with a degree in mechanical engineering tech, and what kind of jobs would I be able to get? I have looked around my area at jobs and they all seem to be in a factory, is that all I will be able to do with that degree? Also I have to choose a concentration to finish my degree what would be better system, polymer, or radiation polymer concentration? Thanks for any help Mechanical engineering technology graduates typically work as mechanical design engineers, which specifically means working with a CAD system, like Pro/ENGINEER or SolidWorks, designing part and assembly models, analyzing them for stress, deflection, fatigue, modal shapes and natural frequencies with analysis software, like ANSYS or COSMOSWorks, and making drawings with the CAD system. You would get involved with prototyping and testing, too. Design engineers can either work in product development or in support of manufacturing by designing equipment. I graduated in 1990 with a BS in MET, and I am now a principal engineer, supervising design engineers with mechanical engineering degrees. I work in product development, and our product is large equipment. So I get to work in both arenas. And yes, design engineers can also be graduates with mechanical engineering degrees, too. The major difference between the two is that MET focuses less on theory and more on practical work. ME focuses on theory, and thus prepares you for further graduate work. Design engineers usually work in or in association with a manufacturing facility. As for the concentration, you really need to see what you really like. It is usually important that you like working with CAD systems and analysis software. I wish you all the best! |
