Do you think that the service industry will be the future of Michigan's blue collar employment?

Jobs such as:
Lawn care and landscape.
cleaning services.
chimney sweeps and vent cleaners.
Lot sweeping.
Etc.

Yes, but the service industry is large. I'm talking about medical professions, tourism industry. A nurse works in the service industry, but the job requires alot of education. I think Michigan's problem was it's inability to adjust to market shifts. Michigan can't be a Vegas (which is almost 100% service industry). However, Michigan can diversify more. The auto industry will have to adjust. Remember, the auto industry is hurting in Michigan, but alot of other states are gaining auto jobs from the big three Japan (Honda, Nissan, and Toyota). They build plants in other states. Examples: The build vehicles and car parts in plants in the following states:
Alabama,
6 locations in Ohio,
North Carolina, Indiana, and South Carolina.
NISSAN builds vehicles in plants in Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia
TOYOTA builds vehicles in plants in Alabama, Kentucky, Texas, West Virginia, Mississippi, and California.
Think if they chose Michigan for 20% of these locations. Michigan would be way better off. Manufacturing jobs produce more service jobs and everyone wins. I think the unions have too much control in this state. They served a purpose and one point, and they still serve a purpose. However, manufacturers should want to move there plants to this state. Unfortunately, the unions are bringing the state down.

What about retraining?

Juding by the way things are going here, that's about it. But you also have to consider the tax raise mrs. Grahom put into action for the small business owners. So who really knows what MI's future holds

I think the Medical and Food Service (maybe even retail) Industry will be the rule in Michigan in the future. We have a world renowed Medical System (treatment and education) and we have numerous loaclly owned food companies located right here in SE Michigan. Not to mention, Kelloggs (the largest cereal company in the world) and Meijer is here and much of the USA gets a lot of their harvest from Michigan. Next, Michigan also has a growing technological economy with EDS, Google, and Compuware having headquarteres/Major presence here.

Then next it will be Water. Signs of that are already showing up with parts of the country alreday figuring out ways to snag our water. Michigan could very well capitalize on this if they took the right steps.

Tourism will be on the list too, but I don't think it will be the dominant industry.
