New to the Insurance Industry in SC, Licensed both P&C & L,A,H whos the best company to seek employment with?

Im in Myrtle Beach SC . What should i expect to go through starting out? any advice with job hunting and what to look for in a good position, what should I be shooting for?

I don't know if I would want to jump right into a job where you are producing. I personally would feel more comfortable having good knowledge of the product I am selling. Working for a captive agent will give you access to people will plenty of knowledge of their product(s). However, I have found that a lot of people that work for those companies get paid just good enough to leave and never get motivated to make really good money.

Commercial insurance is where the money is at. I would suggest steering clear of the nickel and dime personal lines industry. There are plenty of opportunities there but in the long run it won't pay off like the commercial side of business. I won't comment on the health/life side because I don't work with those lines at all.

I would just interview at multiple agencies and see which place is going to help you learn and grow the most. You might find that in a captive agent. I might even suggest you spend a year or two with a carrier because you will learn quite a bit about insurance in that time. You will also make contacts at agencies so when you want to move on, it won't be very hard to find a job.

It really depends on what you're looking for. Do you want to be a captive agent (only selling for one company, like State Farm or Allstate) or an independent agent (selling for many different companies)?

Honestly, I recommend starting with a captive agent. That way you only have to learn one set of rules. If you become an independent agent you have as many sets of rules to learn as you have companies to write business through. Once you are more experienced you can switch if you like, but you'll have a strong basis to grow from.

I do recommend State Farm because they have really great training and a pretty good reputation. You also get lots of support from your underwriters, unlike some other companies that very much restrict access. With State Farm you'd be "Agent's staff" - still a licensed agent but not the owner of the agency. Every State Farm agent offers different salary and bonus procedures which can vary widely, so interview with as many as possible.

Best of luck to you!
