Should the law allow discrimination IF鈥??

PHOENIX 鈥?Arizona
http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/21...

Rep. Tom Prezelski, D-Tucson, and two other Democrats have introduced
a bill would expand a state law that now forbids workplace
discrimination on the basis of gender.
"Some legislators are continuing to support discrimination," Prezelski
said. "They don't think this is politically expedient."

The Democratic bill, proposed for consideration during the
Legislature's 2008 session, includes a provision that religious
organizations could use sexual orientation and gender identity or
expression as criteria for employment as long as the job is directly
related to religious functions.
The stipulation was included to assuage the concerns of religious
groups, Prezelski said.
"They have certain beliefs and we shouldn't trample on them," he said.

In my opinion鈥?this law is the same as attempting to pass a law requiring equal treatment of African-Americans鈥?Unless you are a member of the Southern Baptist church.
IF we as a nation believe that ALL HUMANS are equal then lets have the stones to say it.
IF we believe that all white heterosexual Christian males are equal鈥?Then why are we even bothering to wast the paper to purpose these laws?

Of course it should not. A human right is a human right - it is not contingent.

Religion when it holds up examples such as this shows its true colours in that it wishes to deny those rights to select individuals, yet wishes the protection of human rights when applied to its own members. This is both hypocrytical and - to use a religiously motivated term - evil.

But at least it shows us what the religious are like. And the words loving, good or moral do not spring to mind.

discrimination should be legal for all private businesses, clubs, organizations, etc.

This just goes to show you how intolerant and backward religious groups are that they would want a separate distinction allowing them to discriminate on the basis of gender. This comes as no surprise, however, if you read the Bible.

"IF we as a nation believe that ALL HUMANS are equal then lets have the stones to say it."

That is exactly the point... Well said there!

Seperation of Church and State.

You can't have it both ways.

I live here in AZ and I wish they would quit making more laws, We don't want their help in our lives. We have consistently voted against new stupidity and they still wanna make more

Private organizations have every right to hold their membership open or closed to whomever they deem fit, and to hold their membership to whatever rules they see fit.

If the Roman Catholic Church wishes to refuse to ordain Women, so be it. If the KKK wishes to forbid blacks from joining, so be it. If the Boy Scouts want to ban gays and atheists, so be it (though, they should stop receiving government money then).

Only the government is held to standards of universality, and it is a sad day for the US if we ever change that, because it would mean dispensing with the First Amendment.

If, for example, the Catholic Church has an all-male priesthood and has legitimate theological reasons for that, then the state has no right to force the Church to change. That's why we have freedom of religion in this country.

I work for the Catholic Church as a lay employee, and there's no reason why a man couldn't do my job. So if the Church hired only women to do my job, then that would be discrimination.

But making a law saying that the Church has to have female priests, or male nuns? No. Our reasons for having a male-only priesthood are not due to gender discrimination.

They have to do with theology, and it's none of the state's business to get involved with that. Not if the First Amendment means anything.

..

The government has to acknowledge that all people are equal - religion, which can not be regulated by the government beyond basic tax, safety and other simple areas, does not have to acknowledge that.

Freedom of religion and religious beliefs is one of the founding concepts of this country.

It鈥檚 not like requiring equal treatment of African-Americans unless you鈥檙e a member of the Southern Baptist church. It鈥檚 saying that a church can decide not to put a black minister in charge of a congregation whose members are all klansmen.

The Catholic Church is headquartered in Rome, and specifically lists roles for women and men. It does not allow clergy to marry. This law would strive to allow this to continue. Now, if you don鈥檛 believe that this is good and right, then you disagree with the teachings and doctrine of the Catholic Church, and as an American, that is your right. You are free to become a Methodist, Lutheran, or any other kind of Christian (or even an Atheist, Buddhist, or anything else).

To require that all people be allowed to do all things is to argue that men and obese women should be allowed to work at Hooters. You may not agree with their charters, but you have to agree that their business model does not lend itself to a fat, hairy guy running around in their orange short-shorts and tight t-shirt.

The world is not black and white, and can not be forced into neat little compartments.

Congress shall pass no law bearing respect to an organization of religion or barring the free practice there of.There are over 8,000 different churches in America interpreting the bible 8,000 different ways plus all the non Christian religions. Some will welcome us most won't my father taught me a saying that I find appropriate when dealing with the non understanding christian "God only gave me so many breaths why should I waste them on you".I am TS and live in Arizona and I do not believe passage of this law will protect my job.Laws that try to change societys view due help but they don't solve the problem.Education and showing by being a good role model are the way to move forward.Arizona is a right to work state and has some pretty different ways of looking at things not all bad and not all good.I believe if my employer were to find out that I am pre transitioning Transexual that I would lose my job quick.Without giving to many details they are recognized in the Republican party and I have gotten an off to the side lecture of not acting like a stereotypical gay.I am a very talented individual in my career and I care about the customer whole heartedly but that simply is not enough for someone that isn't willing to try to understand things aren't always black and white.Laws can be passed and laws can be worked around there are ways to fire people that hide the prejudice behind it.
