Are police agencies allowed to get full disclosure of employment history? |
When hiring new officers. I know generally speaking, employers are not allowed to get full details, they can only get dates you were employed. Isn't there a law prohibiting full disclosure?? <>They can get whatever the employer is willing to give them. Any employer can only get dates of employment. However, if a hiring manager knows the person that you worked for in the past they can say, Hey give me the real scoop on so and so. That is the best I can give you. An employment history is limited in what information can be disclosed. But that's just one part of the hiring process for a police department. Every police department will also conduct a full background investigation, which will cover many areas of your life, including pretty full information about past employment. When you apply to a police department, you generally sign an agreement giving them permission to access all this information in the background check. -Police Officer It all depends on the agency and how far they are going to go. Some other methods are they will send paperwork to your listed employers for them to fill out and in those questions they will get all the information they need. Or they can call the employer to ask questions regarding your employment history. Whether it is written or over the phone, they start by saying they are the police department and the reason for their communication (background info for hiring you). Yes there are laws saying the minimum an employer has to give out, but when the police call, employers are usually willing to disclose everything. If there is something in your employment past you are worried about the police finding, i suggest you tell your background investigator ASAP. As long as you are honest, law enforcement agencies are usually willing to work with you, but if you lie, you are toast, and they will drop you faster than you ever imagined. |
