Is it safe to give away a copy of your US passport to a stranger ? |
I am going to teach in China for a year or two. I am contacting several foreign employment agencies. Most of them are asking for a copy of my passport. Is it safe to give? Should I fear about an identity theft or a passport theft here? Giving a COPY to a legitimate employment agency is fine. Most highly repressive governments like China will require a copy of your passport to process a visa application. The instructions on your passport application are specific in advising that you do not give your passport to anyone unless ordered to by a court of law to stop you leaving the country. I think copying a U.S. passport is illegal. |
