Is it illegal NOT to pay an employee while training in the US?

Voluntary enslavement is not illegal. However you have to advise prospective employees what is not covered and what the duration is.

If the employee agrees to work for nothing but experience, then it is in the contract that way. Simple.

Just call it "internship" and it is. lolol

uh no....what does the company policy state? last time I checked ''training'' is not working....its to get you ready for something work related.......oh and in the US murder is not illegal if you have enough money to be bailed out.....keep that in mind...........America has alot of ''crooked'' sides.....but in all honesty if your not getting paid for the training you doing you work for a crumy employer. Most companies in the states do pay you for this time.

YES and if you are asking i would be down at the Office that handles public affairs and employees as fast as i can get there..Handing them my time sheet..Health and welfare in that state would be REAL interested in that type abuse to employees.....

Not all training is paid training for an employee. So it is not illegal to train an employee and not pay him during his orientation period. You should always ask if they are offering paid training before starting any job.

It depends on what company it is. If you're working as an independent contractor or if you are in a truck driving course, your boss won't pay. If you're in a regular hourly wage job, I've never heard of anyone who doesn't pay at least something. If you have signed a contract that states what you will be paid and when, then it would have been on the contract before you signed it that you weren't going to get paid -- or that you were only going to start at a lower wage since it costs them money to train you.
