Employee Handbook?

If something is NOT listed in your employee handbook as a 'rule' or 'regulation' or 'code' do you have to follow it?

My managers try to get us to do things that are not listed as policies for certain things (such as calling out sick) in the handbook. Are they allowed to do so?

employee handbooks generally state companies minimum standards. management MAY HAVE the authority to set higher standards you need to check with the companies human resource department. if you work for a company that does not have an HR dept then speak with the mangers supervisor.
unless a manager ask you to do something illegal, unethical, or immoral do it. IF THEY ASK you to do something that is illegal or is immoral or unethical refuse to do it, and immediately call the mangers supervisor. do not put yourself in the position of being insubordinate(2 wrongs don't make a right) but do not agree to do something you know is illegal. document what is asked of you when, by whom et-cetra and take your concerns to someone higher up the chain of management.

there's a catch-22 innthere somewhere. generally goes like "not intended to cover all situations and circumstances" or something similar.

You sold your life to the corporation for a paycheck. Take the paycheck and just write these petty addenda in the back of your handbook in the "notes" section.

handbook is a guideline not a management replacement.
