What is an oncologist? salary?duties?job lookout?education requirements? An oncologist is a physician who specializes in cancer. I would think the job lookout would be pretty good, since there is no cure that I know of in sight. You need a medical degree and specialized training beyond that. lign="right" > Sign in to vote! My friend is studying to become a pediatric oncologist, which is a doctor who treats patients with cancer. It pays extremely well, over $110k a year in most cases, and involves a lot of specialized education. She got 4 year bachelors' pre-med from UC Davis, then 4 years of med school, then 3-4 years of residency, then another couple of years for specialized oncology degree. I am probably off on the years a bit, but either way don't plan on becoming an oncologist without a lot of schooling... lign="right" > Sign in to vote!
