How does a 40 yrs old male with 3 children survive off pt-time job, limited education, and he's dyslexic? |
the male is African American, he has medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension, and high chlolesterol. He feels inferior due to the fact he that he's felling as a father and role model for his children. He and his children are somewhat obesse. Shopping for everyone can be quite a challenge due to his financial situation. Male expressed confusing thoughts, he does sound depress when speaking with about his current living situation. Male is too proud to recieve or under informed about government programs to aide him and his children The first step in my opinion is to come to terms about accepting government aid. I did and a few years later I became very successful. It is better to accept the aid for a short period of time when the problems are less severe than to create very severe problems like homelessness in the future. He can think of aid like a credit card and he can repay it at a later date if it really bothers him. I rented out parts of my home to cover the monthly payments, so perhaps he could team up with another family in the same situation. It will be tight, but at least no one will be out on the streets. His weight problem may be contributing to his poor health. Perhaps his weight problem is due to eating a poor diet of cheap carbohydrates. Food stamps will hopefully help him buy more nutritious food. This is an example where a few thousand dollars in government food money could improve his health and keep him around for his kids. The government would be doling out a lot more if he had a heart attack that resulted in death or hospitalization. There are many anti-depressants that are available in cheap generic form. They can reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Sounds like this fellow could get a full-time job that doesn't require reading. lign="right" > Sign in to vote! Read, read, read!!!!! When a person is feeling depressed and less valuable as a human being than is acceptable, it is usually caused from feelings of "the lack of personal accomplishment" within the past few weeks or so. And If this seems to be an ongoing issue, than this is usually caused when the lack of accomplishment-feeling has yet to be satisfied. Notwithstanding, the answer, unless the cause is actually a biological chemical imbalance, is in doing something that will satisfy that feeling of lack. Write it out on paper: 1) Final Goal: what I want to accomplish and why...(education, build an outhouse, add a porch to my existing house, own a business, pay off my bills, earn more money, etc) 2) what I can do today to inch myself closer to that goal 3) What I can do in a week that will bring me closer to my goal(make a list...if you don't have a clue what to do,,call people and talk to people who do know. 4) what can I do in a month that will bring me closer to my final goal. Again, make a list, Then call, or visit those people who can help explain what you need to do. Maybe this process will take more than one person and possibly more than 5 people for you to talk with. Do what you have to do but keep moving closer to your goal. Do this with everything you want to accomplish in life. If you don't know what you want to accomplish, READ, READ, READ!! Books, mag articles, any literature that will offer info and feed your motivation. Do not place limits on your self...lack of money, health, size, ethnic background, not a good reader, etc. Decide what you want to do. Decide what you need to do to get it done. Then break it all down into simple daily chores so you don't become overwhelmed with the size and scope of your idea. Taking down a mountain isn't hard if one does it one spoonful at a time. Eventually the mountain will become flattened if one doesn't quit. It isn't always easy to succeed, but since the kids are learning their life's lessons from you, teach them well and give them a sense of pride in themselves. You won't regret this, I promise. Not trying is the only wrong answer. ..:) lign="right" > Sign in to vote! You don't say what kind of community this man lives in, large city or rural area. Hoping that he lives in a larger city; hit the yellow pages under Commmunity Services, also contact faith based agencies, and see if there is a Father's Support Group in the area. He must think about the kids, get on food stamps! Do the children have Medicaid? Considering his health, can he get Medicaid? He needs meds to get himself healthy to work. Also, a dietician, is important. Counseling might needed too, maybe for the family. These should be covered by Medicaid. He must have his confidence in order to find work. Find some community agencies that will help him find a job that will better support his family. Many will help him handle filling out applications due to his dyslexia. For example, pick up an application and ask to return it the next day. Keep in mind to look proffesional both times. Be clean and no jeans!!! There is lots of things a dyslexic person can do! He should recognize his limits, don't try to get a job proof-reading! If handling money quickly is a challange, a casher might not be such a great idea. When trying to provide assistance, look at the whole person, not just one small part. A person has body, mind, and soul! All must have balance. The most important factor is that he wants it! No resources in the world will help if he does not do it himself! It is very hard to pick up after a major set-back. I know this, I have been there myself! 3 yrs ago in a homeless shelter with 1 child -now working full-time and have a small apartment. Also, I have several learning disabilities. Just because a person has LD's and not much schooling does not meant they are not smart!!!!! I am saying silent words for his success! lign="right" > Sign in to vote! i would suggest that the man work more and swallow his pride and receive state help from the state not for his own sake but for the sake of his children. he should look to see if he can get a scholarship to go to a technical school so he can get a better job. as soon as he can he should get off state support |
